Why is TAN Important?
TAN is necessary for all TDS-related transactions. The government tracks TDS and TCS deductions with the help of TAN. Without it, you will incur a penalty of Rs. 10,000. Furthermore, banks won’t process TDS returns or payments if the TAN is missing.
Documents that Require TAN
Every TDS deductor is obliged to provide the TAN number in all documents specified under Section 203A of the Income Tax Act of 1961. These documents include:
- TDS/TCS payments.
- TCS statements.
- TDS statements.
- Annual Information Report.
- TDS/TCS certificates.
- TDS/TCS Challan Payment.
- Additional records as specified by the Income Tax Department.
How to Apply for TAN
Both online and offline applications are available for TAN. To apply online, you need to visit the Protean eGov Technologies Limited website and fill out the application form 49B. After completing the application, adhere to the payment procedure. You can also submit an offline TAN application at your nearby TIN-FC centers.

- Easy communication from the Income Tax Department regarding TDS and TCS deductions.
- A secure login space for each deductor.
- Ability to obtain the latest Input file (FVU) for correction statements and reviewing challan statuses online.
- Reconciliation of TDS to TAN holders as per Section 200A.

Why Is It Important to Know Your TAN?
It's crucial to know who withholds taxes from your income. By using the TAN number listed on your tax statement, you can identify the deductor and the basis for the tax deduction. The Income Tax Department ensures that the collected tax is diligently submitted by each tax deductor with their unique TAN.
