What is UPI?
UPI (Unified Payments Interface), introduced by NPCI in 2016 under RBI guidance, enables real-time bank-to-bank transfers via apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and bank UPI apps. Transactions are authorized by your secure UPI PIN, making payments fast and safe—when used correctly.
What is UPI Fraud?
UPI fraud is any unauthorized transaction or scam on UPI platforms leading to financial loss or data theft. Criminals exploit phishing, social engineering, SIM cloning, malware, and fake identities to deceive users and steal funds or confidential information.
Types of Common UPI Frauds
- Phishing Scams: Fake links mimic genuine sites. Entering details on these pages exposes your UPI credentials and bank information to scammers.
- Remote Screen Monitoring: Imposters pose as bank staff and push remote-access apps, letting them view/control your phone and UPI app to siphon funds.
- Fake UPI Handles: Look-alike social profiles or merchant handles trick users into sharing data or sending payments to fraudulent VPAs.
- Fraudulent Phone Calls: Callers claim to be bank/government reps and ask for OTPs, UPI PIN, or personal details—never share these.
- Money Mule Scams: Victims are duped into letting their accounts move illicit funds, unknowingly aiding money laundering.
- SIM Cloning/SIM Swap: Attackers duplicate your SIM to intercept OTPs and reset your UPI PIN, gaining account access.
How to Protect Yourself from UPI Fraud
- Never Share Your UPI PIN: Not with banks, apps, or anyone—legitimate entities will never ask.
- Confirm Payment Requests: Approve only known, verified requests; enable in-app spam/safety filters.
- Avoid Giving Device Control: Don’t install or grant remote-access apps at someone else’s request.
- Don’t Click Suspicious Links: Ignore unverified links in SMS, WhatsApp, email, or social media.
- Use Only Trusted Apps: Download UPI/finance apps from Google Play or Apple App Store—avoid APKs.
- Change Your UPI PIN Regularly: Aim monthly, or at least once every three months.
- Set Transaction Limits: Configure daily caps in your UPI app to minimize potential loss.
- Monitor Statements: Check bank and UPI history frequently; report unknown transactions immediately.
What to Do If You’re a Victim of UPI Fraud
- Inform your bank immediately and request blocking of your UPI ID/services if needed.
- Change your UPI PIN right away and secure your device/email/SIM.
- Raise a dispute in your UPI app and lodge a complaint with the bank’s grievance cell.
- Report to Cyber Cell: File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in.
- Call 1930: Use the national helpline for financial cyber frauds to initiate recovery steps quickly.
