India is setting its sights on the moon with an ambitious goal of landing an astronaut by 2040. This visionary plan, announced by Dr. S. Somanath, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), highlights the country's growing ambitions in space exploration.
Government Support and Long-Term Vision
The Narendra Modi-led government has approved a historic ₹31,000 crore funding for ISRO, charting a 25-year roadmap for India’s space sector. "For the first time, we have a clear vision for the next 25 years, culminating in India’s presence on the moon," said Dr. Somanath in an exclusive interview with NDTV.
Key Milestones on the Roadmap
- Space Station by 2035
- India plans to launch a module for the Bhartiya Antariksha Station in 2028, with the full space station operational by 2035.
- Lunar Astronaut Mission in 2040
- ISRO aims to plant the Indian flag on the moon by 2040, marking India’s 100th year of independence.
- Advanced Missions
- A series of preparatory missions, including Chandrayaan-4 for lunar sample return, is already approved.
- Development of a reusable and eco-friendly modular rocket capable of human spaceflight is underway.
Boosting Innovation Through Startups
India’s space sector is thriving, with over 250 startups driving innovation. Agnikul Cosmos recently launched a liquid-propelled sub-orbital rocket, showcasing the growing private sector’s role in space technology.
Economic Benefits and Future Plans
Every ₹1 spent on India’s space program generates ₹2.52 in returns, underlining the economic value of these efforts. ISRO is also planning an exploration mission to Venus, further solidifying India’s presence in space research.
A Historic Journey Ahead
By 2040, India’s vision includes a self-reliant space ecosystem, a fully operational space station, and an astronaut-led lunar mission. As Dr. Somanath emphasized, "An Indian flag will fly on the moon, marking a proud moment for our nation."
This bold roadmap positions India as a key player in global space exploration, combining technological innovation, economic growth, and national pride.
